Modernista heritage and contemporary design in one flat

Heritage and the contemporary live together when each room has one hero and the rest is calm and simple. Rules of contrast, colour, furniture and light.

How do you combine Modernista heritage with contemporary design?

Give each room one heritage «hero» and keep the rest calm, current and simple. The hero is the floor, the ceiling, a door or a fireplace. Everything else plays by contrast: plain smooth walls, restrained furniture, hidden light. That way the flat becomes neither a museum nor a soulless new build.

Contrast works when it is deliberate. A historic detail stands out beside a clean surface, not beside another «history». Thirty details of equal weight tire the eye, one highlighted detail delights. So the first step in the project is to decide what is kept, and only then choose what accompanies it.

What should you keep as the hero of a room?

Usually one of four elements: the hydraulic floor, the ceiling with mouldings and rose, the original doors and joinery, or the fireplace or marble surround. In the living room the hero is the ceiling, in the corridor the floor, in the study the doors with stained glass. You cannot make everything the hero at once.

The choice depends on what survives. If the floor is good and the ceiling lost, the floor is the hero and the ceiling is handled neutrally. If everything in the room is weak, pick the best preserved and strengthen it with light. The rest supports but does not compete. We discuss conserving elements in a separate article.

Do hydraulic tiles go with a modern kitchen?

Yes, if the kitchen is simple. Flat fronts without frames, matt or veneered finish, hidden handles, stone or concrete worktops: against that the hydraulic pattern looks like a painting. If the kitchen is itself showy, with relief fronts and ornament, the two themes argue.

A practical device: the hydraulic goes in one zone and the rest is a calm floor. Or it is left as a «carpet» in the middle of the room. The mix of hydraulic tile and contemporary furniture is one of the most recognisable in Barcelona, and it works because the furniture stays quiet. For how to keep the floor itself, see the article on hydraulic tiles: restore, relay or replicate.

Can you paint original doors?

You can, with conditions. If the timber is beautiful, with historic grain and varnish, it is restored, not painted. If the door has already been painted several times and the wood is unremarkable, painting it a deep matt colour is acceptable and gives a contemporary accent. But paint on wood is irreversible, and varnish is stripped at greater cost.

If the building is protected, check with the technician first: some elements cannot be changed. The colour is chosen with the room's palette: dark green, graphite, warm grey, deep blue with white walls work better than a gloss lacquer. Keep the hardware: old knobs on fresh paint look more expressive than new ones. A door with stained glass is best not painted at all.

What furniture goes with ceiling mouldings?

Furniture with a simple form, clear geometry and quiet materials. A contemporary sofa with no decoration, a stone or timber table, armchairs with a clean silhouette, a metal floor lamp. The moulding already supplies ornament, and ornamented furniture creates excess.

A few «anchor» pieces of known design work well: an armchair, a lamp, a table. They set the contemporary tone. Furniture should not imitate the era: false Modernisme looks like a copy, honest contemporary forms look like a dialogue. Sizes are matched to the ceiling height: at 3.5 to 4 m low, light furniture gets lost, while tall shelving and large pictures work.

How do you avoid overloading the flat with detail?

Limit the palette to three or four materials and two or three colours. Remove decorative elements that say nothing: skirtings and architraves in a simplified form, neutral switches and sockets, hidden appliances. Surplus details are taken out until the main ones remain.

A simple test: on entering a room you should be able to say in a second what the main thing is. If you cannot, there are too many elements. Empty space is also a detail: a wall without pictures and a shelf without objects give air. Light is added hidden, not with chandeliers in every room. Once a year you can change objects, but the framework stays. We have a separate article on lighting scenarios.

How does BCN YARD run a project like this?

We start with an inventory of what has survived, propose heroes for each room and show how contemporary finishes will support them. A real example of our work in the Eixample: the Urgel flat, 109.80 m², with four bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open kitchen, where herringbone parquet, slatted timber panels and a marble wall sit together. We run the project in Russian and Spanish: our own crews and trusted subcontractors, one person responsible for the project. Send the plan and photos and we answer within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Do hydraulic tiles go with a modern kitchen?

Yes, if the kitchen is simple: flat frameless fronts, matt finish, hidden handles and a calm worktop. The tile pattern then looks like a painting. A showy kitchen with relief argues with it. Confine the tile to one zone or a «carpet» and keep the rest of the floor calm.

Can you paint original doors?

With conditions: beautiful timber with historic varnish is restored, not painted. A door already painted can take a deep matt colour, but paint is irreversible. In a protected building, ask the technician first. Keep the hardware and do not paint a door with stained glass.

What furniture goes with ceiling mouldings?

Simple form, clear geometry and quiet materials: a sofa with no decoration, a stone or timber table, armchairs with a clean silhouette. The moulding already supplies ornament, and false Modernisme looks like a copy. Match sizes to a 3.5 to 4 m ceiling, where tall shelving and large pictures work.

How do you avoid overloading the flat with detail?

Limit the palette to three or four materials and two or three colours, simplify skirtings and architraves, hide appliances and use hidden light. Test: on entering a room you name the main thing in a second. If you cannot, there is too much detail.
