Original hydraulic tiles: restore, relay or reproduce

Old hydraulic tiles can be polished in place, lifted and relaid, kept as a carpet panel or completed with copies. Each route has its own risk and cost.

What do you do with old hydraulic tiles: restore, relay or replicate?

If the tiles sit on a flat, sound base, restore them in place: clean, polish and seal. If the base has to be replaced, lift the tiles carefully and relay them. If part is missing or damaged, order copies. The route depends on the condition of the base, not on the price of the tile.

A hydraulic tile (baldosa hidráulica, mosaico hidráulico) is cast from cement under pressure: a thin coloured layer is poured first, then the body, so the pattern is not printed on the surface but sits within it. That is its value: the pattern does not wear straight through to the backing, but the layer is only a few millimetres thick. Every decision has to be measured against that layer.

How do you bring back the shine of old hydraulic tiles?

First clean with neutral products and a soft abrasive, no acids: acid attacks the cement and the pigment. Then remove haze and old coatings and, if needed, polish with diamond discs in progressively finer grits. After that the pores are closed with an impregnator and wax or a protective sealer that stops the tile absorbing stains.

The main rule is to polish little. The colour layer is thin, and one pass too many eats the pattern, which cannot be put back. So start on a test patch, and fill cracks and chips with a mortar tinted to match, not with paint. Badly degraded, cracked or loose areas cannot be cured by polishing: there the tile is relaid.

Can you lift hydraulic tiles and put them back?

Yes, but it is a restorer's job, not an ordinary tiler's. The tile sits on cement mortar, and some pieces crack on lifting, so you allow a reserve and photograph and number the layout first. Tiles are freed with a chisel and wedge around the edges, cleaned of mortar on the back and stored in numbered crates.

Then the base is prepared: levelled, waterproofed if needed and set up for underfloor heating, and the tiles are laid with new adhesive and fine joints. There are two typical mistakes. Haste: the mortar must cure before grouting and polishing. And mixing: tiles from different rooms must not be confused, because each room has its own pattern and tones. In protected buildings, lifting the floor may need approval, so check the protection status first.

Where can you order copies of missing tiles?

From Catalan workshops that make hydraulic tile the old way, by hand with a press and cement. For an order you need the size and thickness of the original, a sample of the pattern and colours, and the quantity with a reserve. The usual is 20×20 cm and about 2 cm thick, but old batches vary, so a sample is essential.

A copy will not match the original 100%: the old tile is worn and patinated, the new one is vivid. Two ways to handle it: leave the difference as part of the history, or «age» the new tile by matching the tone to the neighbouring pieces. Lead time depends on the workshop and volume, usually a few weeks, so the order goes in right after samples are taken. Copies can also close the gap left by a demolished partition or opening. The floor should not look patched.

Can hydraulic tiles go over underfloor heating?

Yes. Cement tile conducts heat well, and a hydronic underfloor system works beneath it. But the conditions are strict. The base must be flat and rigid, the adhesive flexible and rated for underfloor heating, the joints fine. Heating is brought up gradually, not abruptly, so neither tile nor screed cracks.

In an old house, height comes into it: underfloor heating «eats» a few centimetres. With 3.5 m ceilings that is tolerable, but at the door, on the landing or in openings a step appears. Plan for it in advance. If height cannot be given up, use thin systems and keep the tile in only part of the rooms. To compare options, read our underfloor heating guide.

When should you keep the tile as a carpet panel in a new floor?

When the original survives only in part or the room is being re-planned. The tiles are gathered into a «carpet» (alfombra) with a border, and the rest of the floor is parquet, stone or microcement. The result is an accent: a historic patch that does not have to be stretched to a whole floor.

The carpet also settles a practical question. Of six rooms with tile in uneven condition, the best is kept and the rest replaced with copies or another material. The owner keeps the authentic where it shows and is liked, and avoids expensive restoration where the effect is smaller. In a contemporary design it is a device we return to in the article on combining heritage with new design.

How does BCN YARD approach old floors?

We start with a visit: we look at the condition of the base, test cleaning on a small area, and only then give the option and the cost in the estimate. If tiles must be lifted, we draw up a layout scheme and store the pieces. We run the project in Russian and Spanish, with one person responsible. Send photos of the floor and the plan and we answer within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Can you lift hydraulic tiles and put them back?

Yes, but it is a restorer's job. Some pieces crack when lifted, so a reserve is planned and the layout is photographed and numbered. Tiles are cleaned on the back and laid on a flat base with new adhesive and fine joints. Tiles from different rooms are not mixed. In a protected building, first check whether approval is needed.

How do you restore the shine of old tiles?

Clean with neutral products and no acids, remove haze and old coatings, polish with fine-grit diamond discs if needed and seal with wax or a protective product. Polish as little as possible: the colour layer is a few millimetres thick, and one pass too many eats the pattern. Start on a test patch.

Where can you order copies of missing tiles?

From Catalan workshops that make tile by hand with a press and cement. You need a sample: size, thickness, pattern and colours. The usual is 20×20 cm and about 2 cm, but old batches vary. Lead time is usually a few weeks. A copy is more vivid than the original, so it is left as is or the tone is matched.

Can hydraulic tiles go on underfloor heating?

Yes. Cement tile conducts heat well, but you need a flat, rigid base, flexible adhesive rated for underfloor heating and fine joints. Heating comes up gradually. Allow for height: the system takes a few centimetres, and a step may appear at doors.
