What a kitchen renovation quote is made of
A kitchen renovation quote is made up of seven or eight separate items: demolition, building work, plumbing, electrics, extraction and ventilation, cabinetry, worktop, appliances, and wall and floor finishes. Each one moves the total on its own, so a single 'turnkey kitchen' figure tells you nothing about what you will actually get.
When the kitchen is part of a full flat renovation, it falls under the overall level: for us that means from €1,000/m² excluding VAT for Basic, €2,000/m² for Standard and €3,000/m² for Luxury. We give a separate kitchen quote after a site visit and measurements, because two kitchens that look identical can differ in price depending on what is hidden in the walls and what goes inside the cupboards.
The hidden part: demolition, walls, plumbing and electrics
Demolition of the old kitchen and tiling, waste removal, and straightening walls for the new units. In Barcelona's older buildings walls are rarely true, and cabinets and worktops need square corners. Levelling is a line item of its own; if it is not in the quote, it gets done later at your expense or not at all.
Plumbing: new supply and waste for the sink, dishwasher and sometimes a fridge with an ice maker. If the sink moves to the window or onto an island, the drain fall to the stack has to be checked.
Electrics: dedicated circuits for the induction hob, oven and dishwasher, sockets above the worktop, power for the extractor and lighting. Induction draws more than an old cooker, so both the consumer unit and the flat's contracted power are checked. We fit gas in new kitchens less and less, but if it stays, an authorised installer does that work.
Extraction: in an apartment building, venting through the facade is often not possible without the agreement of the comunidad de propietarios, and sometimes not possible at all. Then an existing duct or a recirculating hood is used, which changes the model, the price and the size of the wall units.
Cabinetry: where the price difference really lies
Two kitchens of the same length can differ in price several times over, and it is not only the doors. Moisture-resistant or standard carcasses, drawers or hinged doors, soft-close hardware from a known maker or generic fittings, internal organisers, tall housings for appliances, lighting inside the units. Doors are a topic of their own: lacquered MDF, veneer, laminate, glass, metal.
Ask for the cabinetry to be itemised by unit, stating carcass material, door finish and hardware. A line reading 'kitchen furniture, 1 set' makes it impossible to compare two offers.
Worktop, appliances and finishes
The worktop is priced separately: material, thickness, number of cut-outs for sink and hob, edges, and a splashback in the same material. Quartz, large-format porcelain, natural stone, compact laminate: each has its own price and fitting requirements. Exact dimensions are templated from the installed units, which is why the worktop always arrives last.
Appliances have the widest price range of any item. Confirm whether they are included, which exact models, and who is buying them. If you buy them yourself, the models still have to be fixed before the cabinetry is made.
Finishes: tiles or panels on the walls, flooring, paint, and a ceiling with recessed lights. If the kitchen opens onto the living room, the floor usually runs through without a joint, which changes the material calculation.
What to sign off before ordering so the quote does not grow
A kitchen quote grows for two reasons: something was not accounted for, or decisions change after the cabinetry has been ordered. The second is entirely in your hands. Before manufacture starts, sign off the appliance models, the dimensioned cabinetry drawing, the positions of sockets, water points and the extractor outlet, and the worktop and splashback material.
We coordinate the joiner, plumber, electrician and worktop fabricator so the order does not go into production until every element fits on one drawing. One person is in charge of this, and you can talk to them in Spanish or Russian. Payments follow the contract, stage by stage.
