Stone basin and bespoke vanity

A monolithic stone basin needs exact height, a fall in the bowl and a hidden waste, and the vanity must resist moisture and carry the weight. Stains, height, waste, and wall-hung or floor-standing.

What a monolithic stone basin is, and when it is justified

A monolithic basin is a bowl carved from a single piece of stone, often from the same slab or batch as the bathroom wall or floor. It looks like an extension of the wall, with no joints, and is justified where the owner wants one continuous surface and is ready to care for stone.

It is made to a drawing: size, bowl depth, edge profile, tap position and waste position. There are no catalogue sizes and nothing can be changed once work starts: the stone is cut, and any deviation costs a new block.

In a luxury bathroom it is a strong solution, but it demands precision at every stage, from the height of the vanity and the pipe route to the tap position. So the basin is designed together with the vanity, the wall and the plumbing, not ordered separately.

Marble basin: will it stain?

Yes, if unprotected, and acids will leave marks. Marble is calcium carbonate, and products containing acid (perfume, nail polish remover, citric acid, some toothpastes) leave dull marks. Make-up, hair dye and soaps with dyes can leave coloured traces.

Protection comes in three parts. First: a matt or honed surface hides marks better than a polished one. Second: an impregnating sealer that reduces absorption, renewed as the manufacturer says. Third: the stone itself. Dense rocks (quartzite, granite, some marbles of dense structure) behave better than porous ones, and travertine needs its pores filled.

Before ordering, test the sample: drop on it the cosmetics and products you will use, leave it overnight and look. We have a separate article on caring for natural stone. If marks are unacceptable, the basin is made of sintered stone or quartzite.

What height and depth are comfortable?

The top edge of the basin usually sits at 85 to 90 cm from the floor; for a person 170 to 180 cm tall that is a good guide. For vessel bowls the vanity is lowered to 75 to 80 cm so the overall height stays normal. Depth is 45 to 52 cm; width from 60 cm per person and 120 to 150 cm for two.

Errors in dimensions are easy to fix at the drawing stage and impossible after the stone is cut. Typical ones: a bowl too shallow, so water splashes the counter; a tap too far from the bowl or too close to the edge; a vanity without enough depth for the trap.

A good way to check is to make a cardboard mock-up and hold it against the wall at the planned height. Stand in front of it, wash your hands, try brushing your teeth. If it is uncomfortable, you see it at once.

How do you hide the waste in a stone basin?

A hidden waste is done in three ways. First: a plug with a cover in the same stone that closes the opening. Second: a slot drain, a narrow channel in the bowl floor. Third: a waste hidden in the rim of the bowl, where water leaves through a slit in the edge.

Any solution needs precise work from the stone fabricator and the plumber. The bowl floor is made with a fall of 2 to 3% toward the waste, or water stands in a puddle. An overflow, if there is one, is cut into the stone and thought through in advance: many models go without.

The trap and pipe go inside the vanity, and they need a cut-out in the drawer or a shelf with a notch. An access hatch to the trap and isolating valves is planned from the start: once the basin is in place, you can only reach the trap from inside the vanity.

What vanity goes under a stone basin?

The vanity must resist moisture and carry the weight. A monolithic basin 90 to 120 cm long usually weighs tens of kilos, and large ones can reach 100 kg or more, plus water and items. The carcass is made of marine plywood, compact laminate (HPL) or solid wood with a protective varnish, not raw MDF.

Drawer edges are sealed, the drawer base under the trap is cut in a U shape, and the hardware is stainless steel or protectively coated. Fronts are sprayed in polyurethane or veneered with a moisture-resistant finish.

The joinery is ordered from measurements once the walls are finished and the stone basin is in place. For the principles of good bespoke joinery, see our article on furniture.

Wall-hung or floor-standing vanity?

A wall-hung vanity makes the bathroom look lighter, opens the floor and simplifies cleaning, but loads the wall. For a stone basin the frame is fixed to a metal structure or a load-bearing wall, not to plasterboard without reinforcement. A floor-standing vanity sits on feet or a plinth, hides the pipes and does not load the wall.

In light partitions and dry walls, a wall-hung vanity with a stone basin is mounted on a built-in steel frame prepared before the walls are finished. If the partition is thin, a floor-standing solution or a leg is more reliable.

In a powder room a wall-hung vanity works well: the basin is small and the weight moderate. In a master bathroom with a large basin, floor-standing is more often chosen.

How to order, and what we do

The order is: choice of stone and sample, drawing of basin and vanity, tap and waste positions, built-in parts, then cutting the stone. The workshop's lead time is usually a few weeks and is given in writing once the drawing is approved.

A good trick is to carve the basin from the same block as the wall. The pattern then continues and the basin looks like an extension of the wall. More on choosing slabs and laying out the pattern in the article on book-match.

BCN YARD handles this work end to end: measurements, drawing, built-in parts, plumbing, joinery and installation. If you plan a stone basin, we visit your bathroom, propose stone samples and price the solution in the estimate after the visit and measurements.

Frequently asked questions

Marble basin: will it stain?

Yes, if unprotected: products with acid (perfume, acetone, some toothpastes) leave dull marks, and dyes and cosmetics leave coloured ones. A honed finish, a sealer that you renew, and a dense stone help. Test the sample with your own cosmetics before ordering. If stains are unacceptable, use sintered stone or quartzite.

What vanity height is comfortable?

The top edge is usually 85 to 90 cm from the floor for a person 170 to 180 cm tall. With a vessel bowl the vanity drops to 75 to 80 cm. Depth 45 to 52 cm and width from 60 cm per person. Check the size with a cardboard mock-up on the wall before ordering stone: once cut, nothing can be corrected.

How do you hide the waste in a stone basin?

Three ways: a plug with a cover in the same stone, a slot drain in the bowl floor, or a waste hidden in the bowl rim. The floor falls 2 to 3% toward the waste. The trap goes inside the vanity with the drawer cut out, and access to the trap and valves is planned from the start.

Wall-hung or floor-standing vanity?

Wall-hung looks lighter and cleans easily, but loads the wall: a stone basin needs a steel frame or a load-bearing wall. Floor-standing sits on feet or a plinth, hides pipes and does not load the wall. A powder room usually gets wall-hung; a master bathroom with a large basin, floor-standing.
