Natural stone care: sealing, stains and re-polishing

What to do after the stone goes in: sealing schedule, safe cleaners, wine and oil stains, etching and when re-polishing is needed.

What to seal marble with and how often

Seal marble with a penetrating sealer based on silanes, siloxanes or fluoropolymers, which goes into the pores and leaves no film. It is applied first after installation and grouting, then repeated: on worktops and in showers every year or two, on walls and floors less often. The exact interval is on the product data sheet.

The check is simple and you can do it yourself. Drop water on the surface and wait 10 to 15 minutes. If the water stays as a bead, protection is working. If a dark patch appears, the stone is absorbing and it is time to reseal. Know the limit: sealing slows the absorption of liquids and grease but does not protect from acids. Lemon and vinegar will still etch the surface; the sealer only buys you time to wipe.

What you must never clean natural stone with

Nothing acidic and nothing aggressive: vinegar, citric acid, descalers, oven cleaners, bleach and ammonia. Acids dissolve the calcium carbonate that marble, travertine and limestone are made of and leave dull marks. Chlorine bleaches pigment and destroys the sealer.

Nor abrasive powders and hard sponges: they scratch the polish. The right cleaning is simple: warm water, a soft microfibre cloth and a neutral stone-safe cleaner at about pH 7. For a worktop that is all you need daily. Steam cleaning is not used on marble: steam opens the pores and leaves moisture underneath. Granite and quartzite are less sensitive to acids, but the sealer has to be looked after on them too.

How to lift a wine or coffee stain from marble

First rule: blot at once without rubbing, then wipe with water and a neutral cleaner. If the stain has already soaked in, a poultice is used. On light stone, a paper towel soaked in 12 % hydrogen peroxide with a couple of drops of ammonia is placed on the stain, covered with film and left for several hours, then rinsed with water. On dark stone peroxide is unsuitable: it lightens. The test is done in a discreet spot.

Organic stains (wine, coffee, tea) respond to this most often, but those from a fresh spill are easiest to remove before they enter the pores. If a trace remains, repeat. Every treatment ends with rinsing and drying, and then you check that the surface has not lost its sealer.

How to lift an oil stain

Oil goes deeper into pores than water, so it is lifted with a paste: baking soda and water to a sour-cream texture, or a dedicated stone powder, is applied in a layer 5–6 mm thick, covered with film, taped at the edges and left for 24 hours, then removed with a soft spatula and rinsed. For old stains a solvent (acetone, alcohol) is used as the professional advises, in a ventilated room.

The process is repeated two or three times: each cycle draws out part of the oil. In a kitchen grease is more dangerous than wine, because the surface holds it longer, so trays go under oil bottles and sauce jugs. If an oil stain is old, a stone professional deals with it faster and more safely than home attempts.

Can the shine of etched marble be restored

Often yes. Light etching is removed by hand with marble polishing powder on a damp cloth or felt: circular motions, fine powder, water, and the shine returns. Deeper etching needs a machine: the professional grinds the surface with diamond discs from coarse to fine and polishes, which brings back shine across the whole plane.

Honed marble is more forgiving in this respect: etching is hardly visible and it is refreshed without polishing. Dark polished stone shows everything and needs more attention. Before grinding a worktop, cover the sink and cabinets with film: dust and water get everywhere. After the work the stone is resealed, because grinding removes the old protection.

When to call a professional to re-polish

Call when there are many etch marks in different places, when the stone darkens from absorption, or when there are scratches or chips at the edge. For floors in a home, full grinding and polishing is done on condition, usually every few years or when shine has worn off in walkways. A worktop is refreshed as needed.

For the job to go cleanly, the professional arrives with water and a vacuum, protects surrounding surfaces, measures the remaining stone thickness and explains the order of work. Ask for a sample in a hidden area before working on a visible one. Agree sealing afterwards in the same estimate. Any good professional will leave care instructions: what to clean, how often and with what.

How BCN YARD can help with stone care

At handover we leave a description of materials and care recommendations, and agree sealing and a maintenance schedule with the stonemason. If you already have stone at home, send photos and we will advise what to do. We work in Russian and Spanish and reply within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Can marble be cleaned with vinegar?

No. Vinegar is acidic and dissolves calcium carbonate, leaving dull marks on the polish. Even diluted it spoils the surface after a few uses. For marble use warm water and a neutral cleaner, and against limescale wipe the water off right after a shower.

Is sealing granite and quartzite mandatory?

Not always. Dark dense granite often needs no sealing; light porous granite and quartzite do. The check is the same: a drop of water for 10–15 minutes. If it does not absorb, no sealing is needed. Ask the supplier about your specific stone, because density differs between batches.

How much does it cost to re-polish a worktop?

The cost depends on area, depth of marks, access and the stone, so there is no price without seeing the piece. The professional assesses the condition on site and quotes the work together with sealing. If marks are light, hand polishing with powder is enough, and it costs noticeably less than machine work.
