Bathroom lighting: mirror light, IP zones and night lighting

Mirror light should be lateral, soft and colour-accurate, and wet zones need fixtures with the right IP rating. Night lighting goes on its own circuit at very low brightness.

What lighting makes a face look natural in a bathroom?

Light the face from the sides and keep it soft: two vertical strips either side of the mirror or a frame of light around it, with a CRI of 90 or higher and a colour temperature of 2700 to 3000 K. At night a separate warm scene switches on at floor level at a few percent brightness.

The mistake I see most is a single downlight directly above the mirror. It paints shadows under the brows, nose and chin, and shaving or applying make-up under it is awkward. If the mirror is already in the design, the lighting is calculated before the tile is chosen, because the tile decides how much light bounces back.

How do you light a mirror without distorting skin colour?

The best results come from light on both sides at eye level, or a perimeter glow. Use CRI 90 or above (95 in good products) and about 3000 K: cooler light starts to grey the skin, while a warmer 2700 K turns it yellow and gets in the way of make-up.

Fixtures should be diffuse: opal glass, a profile with a diffuser, a mirror with a backlit edge. A bare LED at eye height is glaring. Plan the brightness as adjustable, because morning and evening need different levels, and a dimmer costs very little next to rebuilding a wall.

If the mirror is large, wall to wall above two basins, it is easier to build the light into a mirrored cabinet or a recess behind the glass and run the cable before the plaster goes on.

What are bathroom IP zones and what goes in each?

Spain's low-voltage electrical regulation (REBT, ITC-BT-27) divides a bathroom into four volumes. Volume 0 is the inside of the bath or shower tray and needs IPX7. Volume 1 extends 2.25 m above it and allows only safety extra-low voltage, up to 12 V, normally IPX4. Volume 2 is a 0.6 m band around volume 1, where fixtures rated IPX4 or better are allowed. Volume 3 is further out, with milder requirements.

In practice, fixtures over a shower are specified at IP65 whichever volume the point falls in. Switches go outside volumes 1 and 2, by the door. The volume dimensions depend on where the shower head is and whether there is a screen, so the electrician checks them against the plumbing plan before running cable, not after.

A freestanding bath in the middle of the room changes the geometry: the limits start from its edges, and the ceiling above it follows the same rules.

Can you put a light fitting above the bath?

Yes, as long as its protection rating and voltage suit the volume. With a 2.6 m ceiling the fitting usually sits above volume 1, but steam and splashes reach it anyway, so use IP44 at minimum and IP65 in the shower.

In volume 1 only 12 V devices with a remote driver are acceptable. Drivers are not buried in the bathroom wall: they go somewhere accessible outside the volumes, such as a technical cupboard in the corridor or behind an access hatch. That way nobody has to break tile when a power supply fails in five to seven years.

For deep recesses above the bath, 24 V strips in an IP67 aluminium profile work better than individual spots: steam does not condense on a lens, and the light is even.

Does a shower niche need its own light?

It does if the niche is deep and holds bottles: without its own light you cannot read a label and the niche becomes a dark hole. An IP67 strip along the top or side edge, 2700 to 3000 K, with independent dimming, is enough.

The strip goes into a profile before tiling, so the decision is made at the waterproofing stage, not at finishing. The cable leaves the niche downwards into a drained channel, never upwards. In a marble niche or one lined with large-format porcelain the profile cut has to be exact: a 2 mm error shows as a shadow.

At night this light works as a beacon at 3 to 5 percent, which is the most pleasant form of soft light in a bathroom.

How do you set up night lighting that will not blind you at 3 a.m.?

Night lighting has three parts: a motion sensor at the entrance, a warm strip of 1800 to 2200 K under the vanity or in the plinth, and a level of roughly 1 to 3 lux on the floor. The main ceiling light never joins the night scene.

The strip under the vanity lights the floor and the outline of the toilet without reaching the eyes. Set the sensor with a two to three minute off-delay and only on a night schedule, so it does not fight the main switch in daytime. The lighting control ties the modes together: one scene for the day, one for the evening, one for the night.

Test it on a mock-up, not from a catalogue. In a photo the level looks timid, but eyes adapted to the dark find it bright. A good benchmark is seeing the edge of the bath and the floor without seeing your own shadow on the wall.

How can BCN YARD help with bathroom lighting?

Bathroom lighting depends on waterproofing, tiling and electrics, so it is settled before the first chase is cut. We visit the site, measure, agree the scenes with you and tie the fittings to the plumbing plan. We work with our own crew and trusted subcontractors, one person is responsible for the site, and we run the project in Russian and Spanish.

After the visit we prepare the estimate and discuss with you which fittings and profiles belong to electrics and which to finishing, so there are no surprise extras halfway through.

Frequently asked questions

What mirror light does not distort skin colour?

A soft side light with CRI of 90 or above and about 3000 K. Two vertical strips beside the mirror or a perimeter frame give even light with no shadows under the nose or brows. A single light from above distorts the face, and a cold 4000 K white turns the skin grey.

What do IP zones mean in a bathroom?

They are the volumes around the bath and shower for which Spain's ITC-BT-27 sets the water protection of fixtures. The closer to the shower, the stricter it gets: IPX7 inside the bath, only extra-low voltage up to 2.25 m above, and IPX4 further out. In practice IP65 goes over the shower and switches move next to the door.

Does a bathroom need night lighting if it already has general light?

Yes, because general light at night dazzles and wakes you. A warm 1800 to 2200 K strip under the vanity with a motion sensor gives 1 to 3 lux on the floor, enough to move around safely. It sits on its own circuit so the night mode never switches on the ceiling lights.

Can ordinary LED strips be used in a bathroom?

Only at IP65 to IP67 inside a closed profile, with the power supply outside the wet zones. An unprotected strip stuck down with tape peels off in steam within a season or two and can short if water gets in. Choose 24 V: it loses less voltage and is safer to maintain.
