How much does a metre of bookshelf weigh?
On average 25–40 kg per linear metre of shelf with ordinary books, and art books and catalogues reach 60–80 kg. That is far more than it looks: a wall of six shelves, 2.5 m high and 3 m wide, comes to about 600–700 kg.
Weight has to be calculated by book type. Paperbacks and novels run about 15–25 kg per metre, hardback non-fiction 35–50 kg, large photography books considerably more. So heavy books go on lower shelves and reinforced bays.
Shelves sag long before they break. A 25 mm chipboard or MDF board with an 80 cm span bends over time under 30 kg. For long spans use plywood or solid timber of 30–40 mm, add a stiffening edge or keep spans to 80–90 cm.
In bespoke joinery we make shelves with a bonded batten on the front edge: you do not see it, but it stops the sag.
Will the walls and floor take built-in shelving?
Walls take it if they are brick or concrete and the shelving is anchored; a plasterboard partition needs a metal backing frame built in. The floor is more delicate: the Spanish code CTE (DB SE-AE) says explicitly that load from accumulated materials in libraries is not covered by its table values and is determined from the owner's data and the design.
The table figure for dwellings is 2 kN/m², about 200 kg per square metre. A library with two shelf walls of 3 m each, at 35 kg per metre and six shelves, totals about 1.3 t of books in 15–20 m², that is 65–85 kg per square metre on average. In a new house the margin is usually enough; in an old flat with timber beams or Catalan vaults a structural engineer must check it.
The basic rule: heavy shelving goes along load-bearing walls or over beams, not mid-span. There is more on checking beams in old buildings in our article on floor structures.
Floor-to-ceiling shelving is fixed to the wall at several points and to the ceiling so it cannot tip.
Which light is safe for books?
Humidity, temperature and pests
Books need stable humidity of 40–55 % and a temperature of 18–22 °C. Damp causes mould and foxing, dry air cracks bindings and glue. Sudden swings do more harm than the values themselves.
That is why a library is not put in a room with a damp wall, below street level without ventilation or next to a bathroom. The back of the shelving does not sit tight against an outside wall: leave a 2–3 cm gap for air to circulate. In coastal houses, for example in Castelldefels, check with a hygrometer and, if needed, add a dehumidifier or a climate system with humidity control.
Against insects, cleanliness, periodic inspection and avoiding cardboard boxes and dusty corners help. The shelving timber is chosen resin-free and varnishes without volatile compounds, because paper absorbs odours.
In Eixample flats with high ceilings the upper shelves are usually dry and warm and the lower ones cooler: valuable editions are kept on the middle levels.
How do you combine a library and a study?
The desk goes by the window or in the middle of the room and the shelving along the walls: books around you, the workplace in light. The work zone gets its own light and sockets, and some of the shelving hides technology.
A comfortable plan for a room of 4 × 5 m: two long shelving runs along the walls, a desk by the window and a reading chair with a floor lamp at the centre. Shelving height is matched to the ceiling. With ceilings of 3.3–3.6 m, as in the Eixample, build a gallery or a rail ladder that does not clash with doors. The ladder hangs on a rail, with the load planned into the wall from the outset.
For the workplace, leave extra sockets, network, the ability to close the door for calls, and acoustic treatment: books on their own absorb sound well. Working papers hide behind closed fronts on the lower units.
The study as a room of its own is covered in our home office article, and bespoke joinery in our piece on built-in storage.
How BCN YARD builds libraries
A bespoke library combines joinery, lighting, climate and structural calculation, and it is easier to run with one team. We have our own crew and trusted subcontractors, with one person responsible for the site, and we work in Russian and Spanish.
First a visit and measurements, then a check of walls and floor with a structural engineer and a staged estimate. Payment by contract and in stages. We usually answer an enquiry within an hour.
Frequently asked questions
How thick should a shelf be for heavy books?
For spans up to 80 cm use plywood or solid timber of 30 mm; for 90–100 cm, 35–40 mm or a board with a stiffening edge at the front. Chipboard and MDF of 18–25 mm are only suitable for light books or short spans up to 60 cm.
Can you keep books in a room with air conditioning?
Yes, as long as the air does not blow directly onto the shelves or cause sharp swings in humidity. Air conditioning dries the air, and in winter with heating humidity drops below 40 %. Keep a hygrometer in the room and, if needed, a controlled humidifier.
Do you need a ladder in a home library?
With ceilings above 2.7 m and shelves to the ceiling, yes: a rail or a portable ladder. A rail ladder is made to measure and fixed to the shelving with spare load capacity in the wall. The top shelves are best kept for volumes you rarely use.
