Radiant floor cooling in Barcelona: does it work?

On the coast humid air stops you cooling the floor below the dew point, so a cooling floor delivers 20 to 35 W per square metre and does not replace air conditioning. It works as base comfort with dehumidification and precise control.

Can underfloor heating replace air conditioning in a Barcelona summer?

No, not as the sole source of cooling. A cooling floor typically removes 20 to 35 W per square metre, and a hot flat with south-facing windows has a higher peak load. Humid coastal air limits the floor water temperature to the dew point, and beyond that you cannot cool.

It is a good base layer: the floor keeps the room a couple of degrees cooler and removes the stuffy feeling without a draught. But on design days a second system is needed beside it: a ducted unit, a fan coil or a dehumidifier with cooling. That is how the project is conceived: the floor gives comfort and the second system covers peaks and dries the air.

What is the dew point and why does the floor sweat?

The dew point is the temperature at which water vapour in the air starts to condense into droplets on a cold surface. At 26 C in the room and 60 percent humidity, the dew point is around 18 C; at 70 percent it approaches 20 C. A floor surface colder than that point gets covered in moisture.

So the floor water is not supplied below 16 to 18 C, and the surface is held at least 2 C above the dew point. In practice that means 20 to 22 C on the floor surface. A controller with temperature and humidity sensors manages it: when humidity rises, it shuts the cooling circuit. Without sensors, water appears on the floor after the first muggy evening, and wood and rugs suffer most.

That is why a cooling floor without humidity control is never installed.

Do you need a dehumidifier?

Yes, almost always. The drier the air, the lower the dew point and the more the floor can cool. A dehumidifier lowers humidity to 45 to 55 percent and then the floor works at full output without risk.

There are three ways. Build the dehumidifier into a ducted system and distribute dry air to the rooms. Complement heat-recovery ventilation with a dehumidifying circuit. Or put a standalone dehumidifier in the ceiling void of a technical room. In a coastal flat where summers are humid, drying the air often matters more than the cold itself, because humidity makes heat feel heavy. We have written about general ventilation and air quality in another article.

Without dehumidification, a cooling floor is usually set to a minimum mode and gives little.

Which parquet and finishes suit a cooling floor?

Stone and porcelain of 10 to 12 mm work best: they conduct cold well and tolerate swings. For timber, choose engineered board of 10 to 15 mm, glued over the full surface, with low thermal resistance (no more than 0.10 to 0.15 m2K/W).

Solid wood, very wide boards and floating installation are a risk in this scheme: with temperature and humidity cycles the wood moves and gaps appear. Rugs and thick carpet insulate the floor and reduce cooling to nearly zero. The finish manufacturer must confirm that it permits cooling, not only heating. More on choosing a floor is in our article on how to choose flooring for a home.

In a flat with marble or stone, common in high-end projects, a cooling floor works without compromises.

How do you control the system so the floor does not get damp?

You need temperature and humidity sensors in every zone, a dew-point controller and a shut-off valve that isolates the circuit if there is a risk of condensation. Water never drops below the design temperature and the mode runs on a schedule, not all night.

The hydraulics are designed together with a reversible heat pump. Fan coils on the same circuit drain condensate to the sewer, so they are fitted before ceilings close. Newer systems offer smart settings in which the controller calculates the dew point itself and raises the water temperature.

At commissioning the sensors are checked and a test is run: high humidity is simulated and you watch whether the valve closes. It takes an hour and avoids the most unpleasant problem.

Is a cooling floor worth it in a coastal flat?

It is, if you are already installing underfloor heating and a heat pump and want gentle base comfort without draughts. Adding cooling is then cheap: a reversible pump, sensors and dehumidification. Installing the floor only for cooling makes no sense.

In a seafront villa in Castelldefels, with high ceilings and glazed facades, the floor's role is more modest still: the sun brings a load the floor cannot remove, and solar shading and ventilation matter more. The approach is the same: reduce heat gains first, then choose the equipment.

If you do not live in Barcelona year round, remote control through an app or home automation lets you switch the mode on the day before you arrive.

How can BCN YARD help with climate in flats and houses?

We visit the site, look at windows, orientation and ceiling heights, and decide with you whether a cooling floor is needed or a ducted system will do. We work with our own crew and trusted subcontractors, one person is responsible for the site, and the estimate is prepared after the visit and measurements. We work in Russian and Spanish.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cooling floor replace air conditioning?

No. It removes about 20 to 35 W per square metre and on the coast water temperature is limited by the dew point. The floor gives base comfort and removes stuffiness, but on hot days a ducted system, a fan coil or a dehumidifier with cooling is needed beside it.

Why does a cooling floor sweat in summer?

If the floor surface is colder than the dew point, moisture from the air settles on it as droplets. At 26 C and 60 percent humidity the dew point is around 18 C. So water is not supplied below 16 to 18 C, and humidity sensors with a controller shut the circuit if there is a risk.

Do you need a dehumidifier with a cooling floor?

Almost always. A dehumidifier lowers humidity to 45 to 55 percent, the dew point falls and the floor can cool more without condensation risk. In a coastal flat, drying the air often matters more than the cold itself, because humidity is what makes heat feel heavy.

Which parquet suits a cooling floor?

Engineered board of 10 to 15 mm, glued over the full surface, with thermal resistance not above 0.10 to 0.15 m2K/W. Solid wood, very wide boards and floating installation are avoided: timber moves with temperature and humidity cycles. The manufacturer must confirm it permits cooling.
