Floor-to-ceiling and flush concealed doors: decisions before ordering

How a concealed door without casing is built: frame in the wall, hinges, latches, 2.7–3 m height, acoustics and the order of work.

What a hidden door and a floor-to-ceiling door are

A hidden door has no visible frame or casing: the leaf is recessed flush with the wall plane and reads as part of it, painted the same colour or clad in the same panel. A floor-to-ceiling door rises to the structural slab, 2.7–3 m or more, and removes the horizontal line above the lintel. The two ideas are often combined: a wall without doors, where the entrance is found by the fine shadow of its gap.

The effect is strong, which is why it is chosen for quiet-luxury interiors: unbroken walls and the proportions of Eixample high ceilings. But it has a price. A tall door is heavier and more demanding, needs precise wall geometry, and any inaccuracy shows as the shadow of an uneven gap. It must be decided before plastering starts, not after.

Will a 3-metre door warp

It can, if the leaf is made like an ordinary door. A tall leaf is prone to twist and bow: the humidity difference between the corridor side and the room side twists it like a propeller. So for 2.7–3 m the leaf is built with a rigid core and a reinforcing frame of steel or aluminium sections inside, 40–50 mm thick.

Veneer is applied symmetrically on both faces to balance stresses. Before installation the door is acclimatised in the room, and the home is kept at normal humidity, around 40–60 %. If you are not in the flat regularly this matters most: switched-off heating and closed windows cause sharp swings. The manufacturer states a warp tolerance, and it is worth asking for it in writing, 2–3 mm over the full height.

What hinges are used for hidden doors

Concealed hinges are recessed into the leaf edge and the frame and cannot be seen from outside. For a 3 m door, three or four hinges with three-way adjustment are used: height, width and compression. The load rating per hinge is given by the manufacturer and is chosen with a margin over the weight of the leaf, which can reach 60–100 kg.

Adjustment matters as much as the hinge itself. Over time a door settles, and without adjustment the gap goes crooked. A good installer sets a 3–4 mm gap all round and keeps access to the adjustment screws. For very large, heavy leaves a pivot is used: an axis in the floor and at the top instead of edge hinges, and the door turns about a central axis, but this solution needs reinforcement of floor and ceiling.

Latches: magnetic and push-to-open

A hidden door has no handle, or a recessed one. So it opens by push-to-open or is held by a magnet and, where needed, locked with a mortise lock with a recessed pull or an electromagnetic lock. A magnetic latch is silent and keeps the leaf pressed evenly against the seal.

Bedrooms and bathrooms need privacy locks; a store room or utility room needs a simple magnet. For an interior door used daily, pick a mechanism with a proven stroke: push latches suit wardrobes and niches, but for doors with constant traffic a handle, even recessed, is more dependable. If the door leads into a clinic or an office, evacuation requirements apply: on exit routes the door must open without a key and without effort.

Can a hidden door be soundproofed

Yes, with limits. An ordinary hidden door gives modest insulation, around 30–35 dB, because of the gap and the light leaf. To raise it you need a heavy leaf with an acoustic core, a tight perimeter seal, an automatic drop seal in the bottom edge and an airtight frame built into the wall.

Understand that the door is only part of the barrier. If the wall around it is thin and weak, sound will go through the wall and an expensive door will not help. For a study, bedroom or home cinema, acoustics are planned in the wall and the door together, under one acoustic brief. We cover this in our article on acoustic comfort.

When the frame goes in: before or after plastering

Before plastering and before the final wall finish. The hidden frame (sometimes called a cassette or concealed frame) is fitted after the partition is built and before skim filler, so that filler and paint run flush over the frame profile. The leaf is hung at the very end, once walls are painted and dust has settled.

If the frame goes in after plastering, the wall has to be opened and repaired, and the junction line comes out uneven. Cracks at the boundary of frame and wall are prevented with reinforcing mesh and an elastic joint. When planning doors, agree the layout in advance: opening height, position of the skirting and shadow gap, thickness of the finish coat. A skirting with a shadow gap meeting a hidden door needs an exact drawing.

How BCN YARD can help with hidden doors

Our 250 m2 children's psychology centre in the Eixample (01–06.2026) had 24 concealed doors. We agree height, mechanism, sound insulation and the order of work with you, so that frames go in before wall finishing. We work in Russian and Spanish. Send us the floor plan and we will reply within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 3-metre hidden door weigh?

Usually 60–100 kg, depending on thickness, core and cladding. Weight drives the choice of hinges, frame reinforcement and fixing to the slab. Give the manufacturer exact dimensions and the cladding material, and they will advise hinges and wall load. The partition for such a door must be reinforced.

Does a hidden door need casing?

No, they are removed: the frame is built into the wall and the gap looks like a fine shadow. For this plaster and paint run flush with the frame and the joints are reinforced. If you prefer a classic look, casing can stay, but then it is no longer a hidden door.

Can a hidden door go in an old Eixample building?

Yes, if the partition is new or the wall can be levelled. In old walls the geometry is inexact and a hidden frame requires aligning the opening. A load-bearing wall is not touched without a project, so the door goes into new partitions or existing openings by agreement.
