Venetian plaster: when the wall becomes the finish

Polished lime stucco: substrate, coats, where it suits, gloss versus matte, how to recognise the real thing and how to repair it.

What Venetian plaster is and how it differs from paint

Venetian plaster, estuco veneciano, is a thin layer of lime putty with marble dust, applied by trowel in several passes and burnished to a deep, slightly mirrored sheen. Unlike paint, it does not sit on the wall as a film but becomes part of the surface: stone-like, with depth and shifts of light.

The base is slaked lime and marble flour. Pigments are mixed into the mass, so a scratch does not reveal a white substrate. After application the lime hardens gradually by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and reaches its final strength over weeks. For a luxury interior it is the choice when the wall should be the main material of the room, on a par with stone and wood.

How real estuco differs from an acrylic imitation

The real thing is made of lime and marble flour; an acrylic imitation is polymer resin with filler. The difference shows in touch too. Lime stucco is cool and dense, the sheen deep and uneven, with living clouds. Acrylic feels warmer, its sheen is a plastic film, and the pattern repeats because it is made with a roller or stencil.

The practical difference: an acrylic film does not breathe, lifts in blisters in humidity and yellows in light over time; lime is vapour-permeable and ages well. To recognise it, ask the applicator for the product data sheet (composition on the manufacturer's sheet), a sample with a corner, and count the passes. If someone promises Venetian plaster in a day, it is acrylic. Real work goes in coats, with pauses.

What substrate lime stucco needs

Flat, dry, sound and compatible with lime. The ideal substrate is a cement-lime render with a thin, well-smoothed finishing coat, to the quality standard asked for under gloss paint. On plasterboard the joints are filled with reinforcing tape and the surface is primed with a dedicated primer.

Every irregularity in the wall shows in stucco, because a burnished surface reflects light like a mirror: a 2 mm wave is visible in side light from a window. So walls are checked with a long straightedge before application and, if needed, levelled with a thin coat. Substrate moisture must be normal, with no leaks or stains; fresh plaster or filler must dry. If the wall is old, brick and lime, it is a nearly perfect base.

How many coats and how long it takes

Usually three to five coats, plus primer and the final burnishing or wax. Each coat goes on thin, 0.3–1 mm, once the previous one has dried. The last coat is compacted with a steel trowel while still plastic and then rubbed with wax or a soap-based product for sheen and protection.

Time depends on area, temperature and air humidity, not on a wish to hurry: lime dries by its own rules and cannot be rushed, or cracks and patches appear. Count on a room taking days, not hours, and plan other trades around it: the plasterer comes in after the painter's preparation and before built-in furniture, so the surface is not scratched. The cleanest work is done by one person across a whole plane, with no change of hands mid-wall.

Can Venetian plaster go in a bathroom

Outside direct splash, yes: on walls above a bath, beside a basin at a safe distance, in a guest cloakroom. Inside the shower itself it does not work: constant water and steam destroy the wax and an ordinary lime coat. For showers there is another Moroccan technique, tadelakt (a separate article in our blog), with a soap treatment, designed for water.

A wet room needs waterproofing under the plaster in the shower zone, good extraction and a protective finish: wax, soap impregnation or a dedicated lacquer. Without ventilation, moisture collects on the surface and streaks show in the gloss. In a bathroom, instead of high gloss, a matte version, marmorino, with fine marble grit, is often chosen: it resists streaks better and looks calmer.

How to repair it if a scratch appears

A light scratch on the wax is fixed locally: wipe, refresh the wax and pass the trowel. A deeper one is dealt with by fine sanding, a thin coat of new material and a fresh burnish. A patch shows as an area with a different sheen, so it is better to redo the plane up to the nearest corner or architectural joint.

To keep repair possible, the plasterer leaves a tightly closed leftover of the tinted mix from the same batch and notes the shade name. Built-in furniture and light fittings are planned so that the wall is not scratched in daily use: by the entrance, near furniture with sharp corners or at chair-back height, protective profiles are used. It is a small thing that preserves the stucco for decades.

How BCN YARD can help with wall finishes

We look at the walls before the finish is chosen: if the substrate does not suit lime, we say so at once. We make the sample on your walls and in your light, then agree the schedule so the plasterer comes in at the right moment. We work in Russian and Spanish, under contract with staged payments. Write to us and we will reply within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venetian plaster cold or slippery to the touch?

The burnished surface is smooth and cool like stone, but not slippery in any practical sense: it is a wall, not a floor. The matte waxed version feels warm and velvety. For a stone feel in a bedroom or living room, gloss works; for some grain, choose marmorino.

How long does Venetian plaster last?

On a flat substrate and away from water, decades: lime does not age like paint. Wax is renewed as needed, usually every few years in high-traffic spots. Durability depends on substrate quality and care, so in an estimate look at preparation, not only at the price per square metre.

Can you paint over Venetian plaster?

Technically yes, but then you lose what it was for: depth and sheen. Paint over wax adheres poorly and the wax must be removed and the wall primed. If you tire of the colour, the wall is usually rebuilt with thin coats of another shade; that is simpler than masking.
