Outdoor lighting for terraces and gardens

Good terrace lighting is built in layers: paths, plants, dining area, water. You need at least IP65, stainless steel by the sea, warm colour around 2200 to 2700 K and aimed beams that do not hit neighbours' windows.

What layers make up terrace lighting?

Four layers, each solving something different. Orientation light: low bollards along paths and steps, so you see where you tread. Task light over the dining area and kitchen: bright enough to read a menu and carve meat, but dimmable. Accents on plants, walls and trees, which give depth. And water: lighting for the pool or a basin.

The principle is simple: a little light in the right places beats a lot of light everywhere. One powerful floodlight kills a terrace, while eight warm sources of 2 to 4 W create atmosphere and let you see the stars. Scenes (dinner, party, night minimum) are set on a remote or an app and can be controlled from afar. The lines for scenes are planned in the electrical design, while the floor and walls are open.

Which luminaires survive sea air?

For the coast (Castelldefels, Sitges, Maresme) you need bodies in 316 stainless steel, brass or bronze, or aluminium with a marine-grade powder coating, and seals that do not age in UV. Ordinary 304 stainless by the sea gets rust spots, and cheap painted aluminium whitens and blisters in a couple of seasons.

Protection: at least IP65 where rain falls or water hits the fitting directly; IP67 for in-ground and paving-recessed fittings; IP68 for submersibles. Do not forget connections: most failures are not the fitting but the splice, so use gel-filled sealed or moulded connectors. If the budget is short, buy fewer fittings but better ones.

How do you light plants without glare?

The fitting is hidden, not shown: the eye should see the plant, not the source. For trees use narrow spotlights on a spike or in the ground, with a 10 to 25 degree beam and an anti-glare louvre, from below (uplight) or from above (moonlight) if the fitting can be fixed to a branch or pergola. For shrubs and low groups use flat, diffuse beams that wash the leaf softly instead of picking out every detail.

The lower the power and the closer the source to the object, the better. Place the fitting temporarily first, look in the evening from where you will be looking, and only then fix it. Green foliage reflects little, so plant lighting needs to be softer than it seems, especially near a white wall that bounces glare.

What colour of light is comfortable on a terrace in the evening?

Warm: 2200 to 2700 K for the lounge area, up to 3000 K where you need to see the colour of food and faces. Cold light of 4000 K and above, which looks lively by day, hurts the eye on a terrace in the evening and attracts insects. For a candle or fire feel, 2200 K works well, and LEDs of that kind have a "candle" mode.

A colour rendering index CRI of 90 or more matters in the dining area: food and skin look natural. For paths and plants 80 is enough. Watch uniformity: fittings from different batches often differ in tone, so buy sources from the same maker and series.

How not to light neighbours' windows or attract mosquitoes

Light is directed downward and away from windows, with shields and hoods, using narrow-beam fittings with cut-off. First check at night how it looks from the neighbour's side, not just yours. Catalonia has a light pollution law (Llei 6/2001, developed by Decret 190/2015) which, among other things, addresses light intrusion into homes, so a spotlight hitting a neighbour's window may be more than impolite.

Insects are attracted mostly by the cold and ultraviolet components of light: amber warm sources and placing light away from the table reduce the problem. No fitting repels mosquitoes: wind, a fan, running water without stagnation and screens help. Do not put a strong source right over the table: insects will come there.

Can outdoor lighting be controlled by timer and remotely?

Yes, and for a house you are not always in it is almost essential. Scenes switch on by astronomical timer (by sunset and sunrise, no manual setting), at night light drops to a minimum and rises on movement or alarm. Control by DALI, KNX, Zigbee or a proprietary system gives you an "evening" button on the remote and in the app, and the schedule can be changed from any country.

Control is planned before the cable is laid: you need separate lines for light groups, space for a control module and a backup communication channel. Dimmable drivers are chosen in advance, or fittings will flicker at low brightness. For security, movement sensors are added at the entrance and along paths, but without switching on strong lights towards windows.

Where to start and how BCN YARD can help

Start with a plan of the plot: where you sit, where you walk, where the neighbour looks. Then scenes, lines, control and choice of fittings, because any cable ends up hidden in the floor or ground, and it costs less than redoing it. Sample fittings are switched on in the evening on site and looked at.

BCN YARD runs terrace, garden and villa projects in Russian and Spanish, with one person responsible for the site. A visit and measurements, then a phased estimate where the electrical design, lighting and control are coordinated with the garden, pool and finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Is permission needed to light a garden or terrace?

Usually not, if it is domestic lighting that does not change the facade or exceed the contracted power. But check the building rules, light pollution regulation and any limits if a protected zone is nearby. A new line and board are certified by an electrician with a boletín.

How many fittings does a terrace need?

There is no single number: it depends on area, floor and scenes. A way of thinking: each layer has its own count, steps and paths every 1 to 1.5 metres, accents by the number of features, dining light around the table perimeter. It is better to start minimal and add than to overload the space.

Do solar lights work for a luxury project?

Not for the main scheme: brightness and life are unstable, colour drifts and control is limited. As a temporary accent in a far corner they are acceptable. The main lighting is built on a wired low-voltage scheme with drivers and control, which is more reliable and allows scenes.
