What should control the light: DALI, Casambi or an ordinary dimmer?
An ordinary phase dimmer suits one or two rooms with tried lamps. DALI is chosen when the home has many fittings and needs scenes, and reliability matters more than flexibility. Casambi is taken when you want quick set-up by Bluetooth without laying a separate bus, for example in a renovation with limits on chasing.
The main rule: the control system is chosen together with the fittings and drivers, not after. Otherwise you end up with a set where the dimmer does not get on with the driver, the light flickers and each manufacturer blames the other.
Why do LEDs flicker when dimmed?
Because the driver and dimmer are poorly matched. A phase dimmer chops part of the sine wave, a cheap driver reacts with current jumps, and the light flickers at low level, buzzes or goes out. The more fittings on one dimmer, the harder the pair is to match.
The cure is choice: drivers that support the required type of dimming, a dimmer with declared compatibility and minimum load, and a test on a mock-up. In digital systems the problem disappears: DALI and Casambi send brightness as a command, not as voltage chopping, and the driver regulates current itself. Architectural profiles and light quality are covered in our article on architectural lighting.
In an expensive interior, dimming down to 1 percent without jerks is often a hard requirement, and it is checked on a sample.
How does DALI work and is it only for offices?
DALI is a digital lighting control protocol specified in the international standard IEC 62386. Power and data run on one pair of wires, polarity does not matter, and each fitting gets its own address and can join groups. The newer generation, DALI-2, is certified with a strong focus on interoperability between devices from different makers.
In practice one line serves up to 64 devices, 16 groups and 16 scenes. DALI left the offices long ago: in flats and houses it gives precise dimming, group control and scenes, and above all does not depend on smartphones or clouds. The price is wiring: the DALI cable runs from the panel to every driver and is laid before the ceilings close.
A specialist programs the system and the documents stay with you.
How does Casambi work and does it need the internet?
Casambi controls light by Bluetooth mesh: compatible fittings connect to each other and to the app, with no central hub. The network is set up in the app and once done it works without internet. According to the manufacturer, internet is needed for firmware updates and cloud storage, not for everyday control.
The other side: control is from the phone or special wall buttons, and remote access from another country needs a gateway. For flexibility in a renovation it is an excellent option, especially where new chases cannot be cut. Many drivers and fittings are compatible, but Casambi support has to be checked on each model.
Casambi is often combined with DALI: a wired base and a wireless layer for scenes.
Buttons or app: which is more convenient every day?
Day to day, buttons are convenient, and the app is for set-up and rare cases. If a guest or a nanny has to take out a phone to switch on a light, the system is badly made. So the entrance, the bedside and the passages carry buttons, each tied to a clear scene.
The one-button scene is prepared in advance: evening, cinema, guests, night, away from home. In DALI-2 there are buttons as devices of the system. In Casambi special wall modules are used. In both cases a scene is changed without rewiring when habits change.
Buttons are placed at the design stage, not after. The app is the second layer: it is handy when you are far from home and want to launch a presence mode.
Can light control and curtains be combined?
Yes, but not inside DALI or Casambi: they control light, and curtain motors live in another system. To combine them, use a common platform, usually KNX or a home-automation controller, to which light, curtains and climate connect. The evening scene then closes the curtains and dims the light with one button.
If the smart-home base has already been chosen, light is connected through a gateway, for example KNX-DALI. For small tasks there are curtain motors with their own control, but a true joint scene needs common logic. Choosing the platform is covered in our article on KNX and closed systems.
It is decided at the start of the project: it determines which cables reach the panel and which drivers you order.
How can BCN YARD help with lighting control?
We visit the site, agree the scenes with you and lay the cabling and panel together with the electrics. An integrator does the programming: one you choose or one of our trusted subcontractors. One person is responsible for the site, we speak Russian and Spanish, the estimate is prepared after the visit and measurements, and you receive the system documents at handover.
Frequently asked questions
Why do LEDs flicker when dimmed?
Driver and dimmer are poorly matched: a phase dimmer chops part of the sine wave and a cheap driver answers with current jumps. Drivers with the right dimming type, a dimmer with declared compatibility and a mock-up test help. In DALI and Casambi brightness is sent as a command, so the problem goes away.
Does Casambi work without internet?
Yes. The Bluetooth-mesh network is set up in the app and then runs autonomously. According to the manufacturer, internet is needed for firmware updates and cloud storage, not for everyday control. Access from another country needs a separate gateway, which is planned in the design.
Is DALI only for offices?
No. DALI is specified in the standard IEC 62386 and used in flats and houses: it gives precise dimming, groups and scenes without depending on phones. One line serves up to 64 devices. The drawback is a cable from the panel to each driver, so it is laid before the ceilings close.
Can light control and curtains be combined?
Yes, if light and curtains connect to a common platform, for example KNX or a home-automation controller. DALI and Casambi alone control only light. The evening scene then closes the curtains and dims the light with one button. The platform is chosen at the start of the project.
