Powder room: the small room that sets the tone

A powder room is small and can take bold materials, but ventilation without a window, light and sound must be solved early. Sizes, basin, wallpaper and insulation from the living room.

Why a powder room can be bolder

A powder room can be bolder than the rest of the flat for three reasons: it is small, nobody showers in it, and it is used only briefly. Expensive stone, loud wallpaper or a dark colour, which would tire in a living room, work here as a surprise.

The load on materials is lower than in a bathroom: no steam, no daily splashes, no harsh chemicals. So you can use what needs gentle care: polished marble, hand-painted wallpaper, lacquer, fabric panels.

There is a flip side: a small room forgives boldness but not carelessness. Every joint, socket and ventilation grille is in view. The solution needs a design, not a handful of pretty samples.

Which materials suit it

What works best are materials that are hard to afford over a large area: a single slab of stone on the wall behind the basin, veined marble, backlit onyx, hand-painted wallpaper, lacquered panels, dark paint on ceiling and walls.

One idea per room. If the wall is stone, the ceiling and other walls are calm; if the wallpaper has a strong pattern, the basin and mirror are plain. Contrast with the living room strengthens the effect: the guest steps from a light room into a dark or coloured one and remembers it.

For dark walls, microcement, tadelakt, lacquer or very well-prepared paint all work, because on dark surfaces every irregularity shows. We cover materials in our articles on stone and microcement. Samples are looked at in the light the powder room will have.

Do you need a full-size basin?

No. For guests a compact basin 30 to 45 cm wide and 20 to 35 cm deep is enough, wall-hung or built into a small vanity. A wall-mounted tap saves depth and frees the bowl's edge.

The rim height is usually 85 to 90 cm. Beside it you need a palm-sized shelf or counter for soap and napkins, and a place for a towel. A lit mirror gives more than enlarging the basin.

In size, the room is comfortable from 0.9 by 1.6 m, and a toilet and basin fit in 0.8 by 1.4 m, though then the door opens outward or slides. A wall-hung WC with a slim frame frees the floor, and we discuss it in a separate article. If the room is very narrow, the basin goes at the side above the toilet, or a corner model is used.

How do you ventilate without a window?

A powder room without a window must have mechanical extraction. Under the CTE (DB HS 3), for wet rooms with constant-flow ventilation the minimum flow is 6 to 8 l/s per room depending on the number of bedrooms (8 l/s with three or more). Air arrives from the dry rooms through transfer openings and leaves the room via the duct.

The supply comes from a 1 to 2 cm gap under the door or a grille in the door: the air needs a way in. That matters because extraction with the door shut and no air inlet stops working. The same duct, under the code, can serve several WCs and bathrooms, but not a kitchen hood.

The fan is chosen quiet (up to 30 dB on the data sheet), with a 5 to 10 minute timer after the light goes off or a presence sensor. The duct goes to a common shaft or outside with the comunidad's agreement; we cover the options in our article on bathroom ventilation and humidity.

What light does a small room need?

Light in a powder room is soft and warm (about 2700 K), dimmable. A powerful downlight overhead distorts faces and tires the eyes. Better is side lighting by the mirror, which gives even light on the face, and accent lighting on the stone or wallpaper.

LED colour rendering should be no lower than 90: otherwise stone and fabric look grey. At night a faint floor-level light on a sensor avoids switching on a strong one. For the light zones in a bathroom, see our article on lighting and mirror.

If the room is dark, do not try to light it all evenly: an accent on one wall and soft light elsewhere create depth. The light, like the fan, is planned in advance before the ceiling is closed.

How do you stop the powder room being heard in the living room?

Sound travels through the wall, the door and the ventilation. For the wall next to the living room, build a stud partition with double plasterboard on each side and mineral wool inside. Such a build-up on data sheets gives on the order of 50 dB or more, well above an ordinary partition.

The door is solid, with a perimeter seal and a drop seal; sliding doors let more sound through than hinged ones, so beside the living room a hinged door is better. A grille in the door is for air supply, but weakens insulation: use an acoustic grille or a gap with a labyrinth.

The drain pipe is wrapped in acoustic insulation and the WC frame is fixed on anti-vibration supports. The powder room is not put next to the dining table: if there is a choice, take the wall furthest from where guests gather.

Wallpaper in a powder room, and what we do

You can, if you choose a material for damp rooms: vinyl on a textile backing or paper with a protective varnish, and protect the wall behind the basin with glass or stone. Wallpaper works better if the powder room has no shower. For choosing and preparing walls, see our article on luxury wallpaper.

BCN YARD designs the powder room as a small project of its own: size, extraction and air inlet, light, sound, materials and the door position. In an Eixample or Sant Gervasi flat with a high ceiling, this room is often the boldest in the house.

If you want to make the powder room the accent of the flat, we visit, look at the layout and propose a solution. The price is calculated in the estimate after the visit and measurements.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a full-size basin in a powder room?

No, a compact basin 30 to 45 cm wide and 20 to 35 cm deep is enough, wall-hung or in a small vanity. A wall tap saves depth. The rim is at 85 to 90 cm. Next to it, a small shelf for soap and a hook for a towel. A lit mirror gives more than enlarging the basin.

How do you ventilate without a window?

With mechanical extraction through a duct: under the CTE (DB HS 3), 6 to 8 l/s per wet room (8 l/s with three or more bedrooms). You need an air inlet: a 1 to 2 cm gap under the door or a grille. Use a quiet fan, up to 30 dB, with a 5 to 10 minute timer, and a duct route agreed with the comunidad.

Can you put wallpaper in a powder room?

Yes, using materials for damp rooms: vinyl on a textile backing or with a protective varnish, and the wall behind the basin protected with stone or glass. It works best where there is no shower. Prepare the wall as carefully as for expensive wallpaper: dry, flat and even in colour.

How do you stop the powder room being heard from the living room?

With a stud partition with double plasterboard on each side and mineral wool, a solid door with a seal and drop seal, and an acoustic grille for air. The drain pipe is wrapped in insulation and the WC frame sits on anti-vibration supports. It is better to keep the room away from the dining table.
