Until what time can you make noise on a Barcelona building site?
Works run from Monday to Friday: general works from 8:00 to 21:00, machinery from 8:00 to 20:00 and utility and pipe-laying works from 8:00 to 18:00. Weekends and nights only with the town hall's express authorisation. This is article 44-6 of the city's environment bylaw in its 2011 text, and your building's own rules may be stricter.
The bylaw (Ordenança del medi ambient) was approved on 25 February 2011 and published in the Barcelona provincial bulletin on 2 May 2011. The article covers public and private works, so renovating a flat falls under it just as a street job does. Amendments were made later, so if there is a dispute, check the current wording on the town hall's legal portal; we checked the published 2011 text.
An important detail: the end time for works and the end time for machinery are different. A demolition hammer, a wall chaser, a hammer drill and an angle grinder for stone are usually treated as machinery, and the prudent course is to stop them at 20:00. Painting, assembling furniture and quiet finishing can formally continue until 21:00. In practice it pays to plan more conservatively, as explained below.
Can you do renovation work at weekends?
No, unless the town hall expressly authorises it. Article 44-6 sets the working hours as "Monday to Friday", and paragraph 7 says night and weekend work, outside the urgent cases, must be requested and expressly authorised by the town hall, which may ask for an acoustic impact study.
The text has exceptions too. The hours do not apply to urgent works restoring essential services (electricity, water, gas, telephone), to works preventing an imminent risk or danger to people or property, or to works that by their nature cannot be done by day or on weekdays. Renovating a bathroom in a flat is not one of them.
You will find "Saturdays from 9:30 to 20:00" online. That rule is not in the text of article 44-6, so do not treat it as a rule. In practice many Barcelona sites stop on Saturdays, and quiet interior work is sometimes tolerated. But that is an understanding with neighbours, not a right. If you need a Saturday, for example before the owner leaves, ask the town hall for authorisation through the technician and attach the schedule.
The article does not mention public holidays that fall on weekdays separately. Assume they are treated as weekends and confirm with the town hall if you plan to work on one.
Are there restrictions in August and at other times?
The bylaw text has no specific ban for August: the same hours apply all year. August limits come from another source, the building's internal rules or statutes. A community of owners may write working hours and seasonal bans into them (articles 553-11 and 553-12 of the Civil Code of Catalonia), and such bans do exist in apartment buildings.
A practical conclusion follows. Before fixing the schedule, read the building rules and ask the administrator whether there are limits by month, weekday and hour. Some buildings ban noisy work at lunchtime, in July and August, or on Sundays even where the law allows it. If the building sets no limits, it is also useful to have that in writing.
August matters for logistics too. Many neighbours are on holiday and the site runs without complaints, but suppliers and subcontractors close and materials arrive more slowly. If timing matters to you, the guide on seasonality and August shows how to reflect it in the schedule. Other towns in the province have their own bylaws: in Castelldefels, Sitges or Sant Cugat the hours may differ, and Barcelona's rules cannot be carried over.
What does the bylaw require of machinery and the contractor?
Besides hours, the same article 44-6 sets requirements for machinery. Combustion engines must have silencers and noise and vibration damping, and must be switched off when not in use. Compressors and other noisy machinery within 50 metres of occupied buildings run with the hood closed and all protection fitted. Pneumatic hammers must have an intake and exhaust silencer. Every machine on site must have a CE certificate and a plate showing its maximum sound power level.
What it means for the owner. Ask the contractor what machinery will be on site and whether it has the certificates. A noisy machine modified without the manufacturer's authorisation (for example, a hammer with its housing removed) gives grounds for a complaint and municipal services may take it away. Responsibility for noise stays with the works owner: the article obliges them to take measures so the limit values of the zone are not exceeded, up to switching off the source, fitting silencers or relocating it inside the structure.
Electricity. Generators on the public road must meet the emission limits and, if the job lasts more than three months, they are replaced by a mains connection. For a flat that means ordering a temporary supply from the utility in advance rather than putting a diesel unit in the courtyard.
Practices that remove conflict. Diamond cutting with water instead of impact, wall chasers with dust extraction, protection for the lift and the entrance, an acoustic screen at open windows during demolition.
What does the owners' community add and how do you notify the works?
The city bylaw sets the ceiling and the building can set its own, stricter one. In Catalonia the owner of a private unit must notify the president or administrator of the works beforehand, and if they affect common elements the owners' meeting must approve (article 553-36.3 of the Civil Code of Catalonia). The statutes and internal rules may fix hours, limits and conditions for the contractor (articles 553-11 and 553-12).
What to send the administrator. A short letter with the address of the flat, a description of the works, start and end dates, hours of the noisy phases, the contractor's name and the responsible person's phone number, a copy of the licence or notice filed with the town hall and of the liability insurance. Add what concerns the lift: protection of the cabin, a rubble removal schedule and the place for the skip. Such a letter takes half a page and prevents half of the complaints.
If noise exceeds what is allowed, the law provides consequences. The president, on their own initiative or at the request of a quarter of the owners, must formally require that acts contrary to normal coexistence stop. If they persist, the meeting may bring an action to stop them and the court may order interim measures, including immediate cessation (article 553-40.2). It is a last resort, but it shows why the relationship with the building is built before work begins.
What should you do if neighbours call the police?
Stay calm, show the documents and, if the works are within permitted hours, carry on. On site there should be a copy of the licence or notice, the contractor's contract, the liability insurance policy, the work schedule and the contact of the person responsible. The foreman should be able to show them on a phone within a minute.
If work is going on outside the hours, it will be stopped and a report may be issued to the contractor and the owner. The city's Guàrdia Urbana (phone 092) operates there, and the town hall has an online procedure for complaints about works and activities. There is an added risk: repeated complaints give neighbours an argument to go to the community and the courts (see article 553-40 above), and then disputes slow the site down more than a lost hour.
How to close a conflict. Answer the complaint the same day. Give the end date of the noisy phase. Offer to measure the noise level if the neighbour believes it exceeds the limit. Agree "quiet windows": for example, no impact work from 13:00 to 15:00 or on the day the neighbour works from home.
If the complaint concerns noise between flats rather than street-side building work, see the guide on acoustic insulation between neighbours: it shows what can be improved in the flat so that noise does not come back after the renovation.
How do you plan the noisy phases so the site does not stall?
Gather the noise at the start rather than spreading it across the whole schedule. Demolition, chasing, opening up apertures and cutting tile and stone fill the first weeks and should end before finishes. After that come the quiet jobs: plaster, painting, fitting, assembly. Neighbours tolerate three weeks of intense noise with a known end date better than three months of constant knocking.
Within the day, put noisy operations in weekday mornings and leave a pause at midday. Warn about the heaviest days several days ahead and pin the schedule by the lift. Leave a margin: if machinery must stop at 20:00 and the job is not finished, it is better to finish tomorrow than to get a complaint and a stop.
Put acoustic protection into the estimate: screens, dust extraction, protection of the lift cabin and sheeting over openings. These lines are not decoration; they decide how long you can work without complaints. Do not accept an estimate without them.
On a luxury renovation of a flat in the Eixample or a penthouse in Sant Gervasi, the schedule of noisy phases is usually agreed with the administrator before the contract is signed. For a villa in Castelldefels or Pedralbes the neighbours are further away, but the bylaw works the same: same law, same hours.
How does BCN YARD plan the noisy phases?
We renovate flats, houses and commercial premises in Barcelona and the province in Russian and Spanish. One person responsible for the site, our own crew and trusted subcontractors, payment by stages under the contract. Project signatures are provided by independent specialists.
If you live outside Spain, send us the address and the building's internal rules, if there are any. We reply within an hour and tell you which hours apply in your case and which documents to prepare for the administrator. The exact price is in the estimate after a visit and measurements; guide prices excluding VAT: Premium from 1,000 €/m², Luxury from 2,000 €/m², Signature from 3,000 €/m². Permits can be handled together with the renovation: see our permit support service.
Frequently asked questions
Until what time can I make noise during a renovation in Barcelona?
Under article 44-6 of the city bylaw, works run Monday to Friday: general works until 21:00, machinery until 20:00, utility works until 18:00, starting at 8:00. Building rules may be stricter, and some buildings ban noisy work at lunchtime or in summer. Check the internal rules with the administrator.
Can I renovate at weekends in Barcelona?
No, not without the town hall's express authorisation. Article 44-6 sets weekday hours, and night and weekend work must be requested; the town hall may ask for an acoustic study. Exceptions cover urgent utility works and averting imminent danger. Treat weekday holidays as weekends and confirm with the town hall.
What do I do if neighbours call the police about the works?
Show the documents: licence or notice, contract, insurance policy and schedule. If you are within permitted hours, work continues. Working outside the hours can bring a report and a stoppage. Answer the neighbour the same day, give the end date of the noisy phase and agree quiet hours.
Are there restrictions on renovating in August in Barcelona?
The text of the city bylaw has no specific ban for August: the hours are the same. The building's internal rules or statutes may impose limits, and then they bind all residents. Check with the administrator in advance and remember that in August many suppliers and subcontractors are closed.
