Hard water in Barcelona: softeners, reverse osmosis and protecting fittings

Hard water leaves scale on glass and taps and shortens the life of boilers and coffee machines. A softener at the entry point protects all the plumbing, osmosis is for drinking by taste, and space and connections are planned before the walls close.

How hard is Barcelona's water and why measure it?

Hardness in Barcelona changes with the source: according to a 3Cat report, water from the Ter is rich in calcium and bicarbonates, while Llobregat water carries more minerals, chlorides and sodium. The water in your home can come from different sources on different days, so there is no single figure for the city.

The simplest thing is to measure the water in your kitchen. Total-hardness test strips are enough and cost a few euros. The result is converted to degrees: on the French scale, 15 to 25 f counts as moderately hard water and above 25 f as hard. For the project that number is needed to choose the softener and resin capacity. Barcelona water is safe to drink: this is about scale and wear, not health.

What does hard water do to taps, glass and appliances?

Calcium settles on everything that heats up or evaporates. Chrome taps dull and gain a white crust, shower glass clouds within a week and aerators clog. Inside a boiler and its element scale acts like a fur coat: heating takes longer, more electricity is used and lifespan falls.

In a coffee machine hard water kills the boiler and valves: the manufacturer demands regular descaling and for expensive models recommends soft water. Dishwashers and washing machines suffer quietly: scale on the heater and in hoses. Heat pumps and heat exchangers also lose efficiency if calcium deposits on them.

That is why an expensive renovation with a matt black tap and a glass screen looks worse within the first year. More on shower glass is in our article on screens.

How does a softener work and is soft water bad to drink?

A softener passes water through a resin that swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium. The resin is regenerated from time to time with a salt solution, so it needs a drain, a 230 V socket and a tank of tablet salt. Soft water leaves no scale and does not harm appliances.

Soft water is not harmful to drink, but it contains more sodium than before treatment and can taste flat. So the kitchen drinking tap is often left on hard water or on a separate osmosis line, while shower, washing machine and dishwasher get softened water. Softening to zero is not advised: water that is too soft is more aggressive to pipes and unpleasant in the shower, and a residual hardness of about 8 to 12 f is usually left, set by the installer.

Magnetic and electronic anti-scale devices do not replace a softener: there is no solid evidence of their effect and we do not recommend relying on them.

Where does a softener go in a flat and how much space does it need?

A softener goes right after the meter and the sediment filter, before the boiler, so soft water reaches the whole flat. The most convenient places are a technical cupboard, the utility room, a hall niche and the cabinet under the kitchen sink.

A typical household softener with a salt tank is about 35 by 50 cm on the floor and 100 to 110 cm tall, with compact models smaller. Beside it you need a drain with an air gap, a socket, a bypass to isolate the unit for servicing and clear access for loading 25 kg salt sacks. If the flat has no technical room, space is planned in the joinery beforehand.

The softener after the meter is designed at the plumbing stage, before the walls close, because pipes leave the riser and chasing finished tile costs more than the unit itself.

Do you need reverse osmosis for drinking or is a filter jug enough?

Barcelona water is safe and osmosis is only for taste and principle. Reverse osmosis removes almost everything dissolved and gives clean water with no taste or chlorine smell. It is handy for coffee, tea and ice, and for the iron and steam generator.

Osmosis goes under the sink: five stages, a storage tank of 8 to 12 litres and its own tap. Part of the water goes to drain, the membrane is changed every two to three years and pre-filters every six to twelve months. It needs a drain, a supply and room for the tank. For drinking, osmosis water is sometimes remineralised so it does not taste empty.

A filter jug removes chlorine and a little hardness, but the cartridge has small capacity and is changed monthly. For two people and one coffee a day it is fine; for a family it is awkward.

How do you protect glass and taps from scale and what goes in the design?

The design allows three levels of protection: a softener at the entry, a warm ventilated bathroom and materials that tolerate scale. Deep textures, matt black chrome and tinted glass show scale more, and for them soft water matters most.

If you do not live in Barcelona year round, softener and osmosis are planned so they do not stagnate: salt and resin dislike long idleness and water in tanks loses freshness. Servicing and regeneration are set through automation and, for a long absence, the unit goes into holiday mode.

So the equipment's space is not taken by something else, it goes into the design alongside the hydraulic scheme. We cover installations before walls close in the relevant article, and kitchen appliances in the one on choosing them before ordering joinery.

How can BCN YARD help with water in a home?

We visit the site, look at the riser, meter and equipment space and plan connections and drain together with the plumbing. Softener and osmosis are chosen with the installer to match your water analysis. We work with our own crew and trusted subcontractors, one person is responsible for the site, and we speak Russian and Spanish. The estimate is prepared after the visit and measurements.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is Barcelona's water?

There is no single figure: per 3Cat, Ter water is rich in calcium and bicarbonates, Llobregat carries more chlorides and sodium, and the source at home changes. Hardness is measured with strips in your kitchen. On the French scale 15 to 25 f is moderately hard and above 25 f hard. It is safe to drink.

Is softened water bad to drink?

No, but soft water has more sodium and can taste flat. So the drinking tap is often left on hard water or fed by a separate osmosis unit, while shower, washing and dishwasher get softened water. Do not soften to zero: a residual hardness of 8 to 12 f protects the pipes.

Where does a softener go in a flat?

After the meter and sediment filter, before the boiler: in a technical cupboard, utility room, hall niche or under the sink. A typical unit with a salt tank takes about 35 by 50 cm and 100 to 110 cm in height. It needs a drain, a socket and a bypass, and connections are planned before the walls close.

Osmosis or a filter jug for drinking water?

Barcelona water is safe, so it is a matter of taste. Osmosis under the sink gives water almost free of impurities, ideal for coffee and tea, but needs a drain, an 8 to 12 litre tank and a membrane change every 2 to 3 years. A jug is simpler, but the cartridge is changed monthly, which is awkward for a family.
