If you want a screen of 120 inches or more, choose a projector. If the room is bright and you watch in daylight, and you need a screen up to 98 inches, a panel is more practical. The line is drawn by lighting and budget, not taste.
A projector gives a big image at a reasonable price and disappears into the ceiling, but needs a dark room: even side light from the street lowers contrast. For partly lit spaces, ambient-light-rejecting screens block light from above and from the sides. Lamps and laser sources lose brightness over time, which should be part of the choice.
An OLED or Mini LED panel delivers blacks and brightness a projector cannot match and needs no blackout. But the largest mass-market panel rarely exceeds 98–115 inches, and the price climbs steeply. On the wall it always reads as a black rectangle.
Luxury interiors often combine both: a projector with a motorised screen that drops from a ceiling recess in the living room, plus a smaller panel for everyday viewing. This is decided before the rough stage so that power, HDMI runs and recesses can be built in.
Speakers hide behind acoustically transparent fabric or perforated veneer, and the room is dressed like a lounge with dark matte walls. Theatre curtains and lit steps are not for everyone.
The front channels sit behind a perforated screen or are recessed into the wall to a layout prepared in advance. Surrounds and ceiling channels for Dolby Atmos are built into the ceiling and side panels. This needs precision: back boxes for in-wall speakers are fixed before plasterboard goes up, and cables run in conduit.
Colour affects the picture. The ceiling and the walls around the screen are kept dark and matte so projector light does not bounce back. Gloss and pale surfaces return the image to the room and cut contrast. Graphite, deep green, navy, wool fabric and natural wood all work.
The room does not need to be covered in panels for sound: reverberation time in such a room is kept around 0.3–0.5 s. A rug, heavy curtains, upholstered seating and a few slatted panels on the side walls are usually enough.
Ventilación y calor del equipo
A closed, soundproofed room with no ventilation heats up during one film, so supply and extraction are designed together with the insulation. Equipment gives off heat, and the audience breathes out moisture and CO₂.
The solution is a supply-and-extract unit with silencers on the ducts and low air speed, below 2–3 m/s at the grilles. Grilles are placed in different corners so they cause neither noise nor a draught behind the viewers. The fan coil is a quiet model, placed outside the room behind the soundproofed wall with a flexible connection.
The amplifier, receiver and media server go into a rack, best in a neighbouring room or a ventilated niche, with HDMI and speaker cables running in. That way fan noise is inaudible in quiet scenes. A projector fan produces around 20–30 dB, so it is sometimes housed in an acoustically lined box.
This is a case where a mistake cannot be corrected after finishing: a duct that has to be punched through an insulated wall destroys the acoustics. Routes are agreed before the rough works with the climate and electrical engineers.
You can: for a living room, a motorised screen, blackout curtains and built-in speakers are enough. Isolation will not be perfect, but for evening viewing the quality is sufficient provided your neighbours are not on the other side of the living room wall.
The typical set-up is a projector in a ceiling recess, a screen that drops from a pelmet or rises from a console, and double curtains: sheer by day, heavy blackout in the evening. The motorised track is driven by a cinema scene in the smart-home system that dims the overhead lights, lowers the screen and powers the amplifier in one go. There is more on scenes in our article on home automation.
Speakers are built into the ceiling and side panels, and the front three hide in joinery or in the wall behind fabric. The subwoofer disappears into a storage unit. Acoustics are improved with soft furnishings and a rug, because a living room with glass and marble would otherwise be too lively.
If the living room of a Sant Gervasi penthouse opens onto a terrace, this approach has a bonus: the evening film is watched with the sliding glass closed, and by day the same room stays a bright lounge. There is one real compromise: loud scenes are best watched before 10 pm.
